Flag Day

It’s amazing how many people have sentimental feelings for their American flag. And every flag has a story. One gentleman displayed the same flag since 1950. Another woman displayed her flag from 9-11 until her nephews returned from Afghanistan. Another drove two hours each way to retire her flag. Each wanted to honor their flag with proper retirement.

And each reluctantly gave up their flag. Their American flag was flown with pride and honor and was more than a flag to them. Each wanted to be sure their flag was going to retire with honor. Their flag was going to be retired with a veteran.

Gives meaning to “bombs bursting in air”, “our flag was still there”. It’s Flag Day. Display your flag today and every day with pride.

Why Is It?

Why is it, when the price for a barrel of oil increases, the price for a gallon of gas increases faster than you can fill up you tank. But when the price for a barrel of oil decreases, the price for a gallon of gas takes days to decrease?

Why Is It?

Why is it when a person with a more liberal point of view (a democrat), when confronted with facts, figures and documentation on why liberalism just doesn't work, will respond in one of two ways. They either start with name calling or flat out deny what is in front of them by saying "that is not what that says". It continually cracks me up.

The Royal Wedding

On Friday, April 29, two billion people watched Prince William and Kate Middleton get married. It surprised me to see and hear negative comments about the Royal Wedding.

“I'd like to take a second this morning to address the ladies in our audience. If you woke up at 4am to watch Royal Wedding coverage, you sadden me. We only recently gained the right to vote. Please don't do things like this to get that right taken away. Thank you. – Danielle”

This comment was posted on Facebook by a local radio celebrity. First, she needs a history lesson. Second, what an idiot!

From the earthquake and tsunami in Japan to the devastation of the tornados in the southern United States, our news channels provide non-stop coverage of all things bad. These disasters prove time and time again its human nature to come together and prevail.

What is so wrong about covering a happy event for a few hours? What is so wrong about a celebration that can bring a nation together? What is so wrong about a nation that is proud of its Royalty, even if they are “just figureheads”? What is so wrong about an event that can bring two billion people together in celebration? Not one thing.

So I say to you Danielle, your ignorance saddens me and two billion people would agree.

English Only Please

As Americans what is so wrong about saying we the people of the United States have decided we will communicate with each other by speaking and writing English. What is so wrong about asking others that want to be an American to learn English?

Europeans have no issue with learning English. Asians have no issue with learning English. But Hispanics expect to have Americans speak Spanish. Our own President expects Americans to learn Spanish. “Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English, Americans need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.” Are you kidding me?

So let’s say the French do not want to learn English. So we will press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish, 3 for French. Then Americans will be expected to learn English, Spanish, and French. Let’s not forget the Germans. Press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish, 3 for French and 4 for German. Americans will be expected to learn English, Spanish, French and German. What about the Japanese, Chinese and Russians?

It is a waste of time, energy, resources and money to have to print and say everything in English then in Spanish. In the State of Florida, our governor has to give emergency instructions in both English and Spanish. Wouldn’t it be more efficient to say the instructions just once? It’s to the point that Floridians are going to have to speak Spanish to continue to be marketable in the job force as now many positions require one to be bilingual.

Many English speaking children, that actually need speech therapy, are on an ESE class waiting list to make room to teach English to the Spanish speaking children. Newsletters come home from school in both English and Spanish. What a waste of time.

Eighty-seven percent of Americans believe English should be our official language. Eighty-one percent believe companies should be allowed to require English only in the workplace. The rest believe we are intolerant. We believe Hispanics are being disrespectful to the American people by refusing to learn English.

I Am American

When I was in junior high school my classmates were talking about what they were. “I am Italian” or “I am German.” When it was my turn I said “I am American.” When I was pregnant with my second son, the doctor asked me “What are you?” I said “I am American.” He said “No, what are you?” And I said “a Caucasian American”.

What am I supposed to say? I don’t have grandparents that are Holocaust survivors. Or grandparents that immigrated from here or there. Nine generations of my family have been born in the United States. I am American. At what point do we drop the titles. If one of my great-great-great grandparents was black, am I African-American? If one of my great grandparents was Italian and one black, am I African-Italian-American? If 10 generations back my family came from England, am I European-American? If one of my great grandparents was black and one of my great-great-great grandparents was an Indian and one of my great-great grandparents was Italian, am I African-Native-Italian-American? All these titles are ridicules. My family has been living in the United States for over 150 years. I am American.

But I don’t believe I am any more American than the Holocaust survivors or the other Americans that have immigrated from here or there. It’s just that I believe my heritage is American. I have a great deal of respect for those that have decided to give up their homes, family and friends to come to the United States. If anything they have a real appreciation of what it means to be American. But I am proud that my ancestors helped shaped this country. I am proud my ancestors paved the way for others to immigrate from here or there. I am proud my ancestors helped liberate the Holocaust survivors so they too could immigrate to the United States. I am proud to be American.
